The Pogo 40, launched in 2003, was a real success, and won several major transatlantic races : Route du Rhum in 2006, Quebec - Saint Malo in 2008 (in the Pogo 40S racing version). When the Structures shipyard decided to renew the Pogo 40, there was an early decision to have two distinct versions : a racing version (the Pogo 40S2) and a cruising version. And so the Pogo 12.50 was born. It shares its new hard-chined hull with the Pogo 40S2, with a freeboard and a deck adapted to cruising.
A cruising yacht...
The cruising orientation of the Pogo 12.50's deck is obvious at first glance, with its huge and comfortable cockpit, equipped with coamings and real seats with backrests. The cockpit is free from any manoeuvre thanks to the 4 winches placed at the rear of the coachroof. Only one line from the mainsheet comes down from the purchase inside the boom to the traveler, behind the double helm. The rig with two sets of spreaders with lots of aft rake has no backstay, giving a wide open aft platform, providing a great access to the sea while mooring, and a great dinghy storage while sailing. Inside arrangement is simple, functionnal and usable at sea, as usual with the Structures shipyard. There is a large aft cabin on port side, a bathroom and a technical area on starbord, a huge saloon and a large front cabin.
... To sail anywhere...
In the saloon, a large central pod provides support when heeling. It also encloses the keel box and the keel hydraulic lifting system. This system reduces the boat's draft of 3m to 1.2m by rotating the keel, made of a composite fin and a lead tip. This provides both access to small sheltered bays and high performance.
... Fast !
Indeed, the Pogo 12.50 is a fast boat. Its hull is wide and powerful, removing the need for water ballasts, contrary to the Pogo 40. Everything was done, both in its design and its construction, to keep it as light as possible (it weighs 30% less than a typical 40 foot cruiser). And the lack of a backstay allows for a square top mainsail. As a result, 8 kts upwind and 16 kts downwind are easily reached !
